Hoax Diver Escapes Charges.
A diver who spraked an air and sea search with an elaborate hoax will now not face criminal charges.
Matthew Harvey from Guernsey was reported missing on 2nd Spetember by his wife after he failed to return from diving. Mr Harvey was picked up by a passing yatch on the 4th September after an air and sea search costing £10,000 was initiated. Mr Harvey told police that he had been knocked out by a boat and had been left drifting for much of the time he was reported missing. He later admited that he had gone to the UK mainland on a ferry, after a member of the public spotted him on the ferry on Saturday afternoon and contacted the police.
"Following a thorough police inquiry and the submission of a file to the law officers of the Crown, it has been decided that with the evidence presently available, no criminal proceedings are being considered in the matter at this time," said Guernsey´s Chief of Police. The police refused to comment on why no charges had been brought.
